New insights on cancer metabolic pathways

Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of all cancers. Such alterations in nutrient uptake and utilization are thought to enable increased synthesis of macromolecules for unrestrained cancer cell growth and to facilitate cell survival under cell stress conditions. Recent studies have shown that the cancer-relevant functions of many well-studied oncogenes and tumor suppressors involve metabolic control, moreover, mutations in a number of fundamental metabolic enzymes have been identified in different malignancies. While metabolic reprogramming confers adaptive advantages to cancer cells, it can also create vulnerabilities that are potentially targetable as a therapeutic strategy. This seminar will provide an overview of recent concepts and discoveries in the area of cancer metabolism with a focus on pancreatic and biliary maliganancies.
