RECTAL CANCER in Nepal -EXPERIENCE WITH 200 CASES

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and women in the United States. In the developing countries like Nepal, there are limitations in diagnosis, treatment facilities and financial abilities for the treatment of cancers. Sincere efforts with these limited facilities can provide satisfactory results in rectal cancer treatment.Patients and Methods: Records of 200 patients with rectal cancer who underwent different types of surgery at the department of surgical oncology from 0ctober 1999 to October 2007 at BP Koirala Memorial cancer hospital, and from November 2007 to October 2010 at Bhaktapur cancer hospital were identified. Details history including age, sex, histology, TNM staging, types of surgery and other investigational records were documented.Results: In 200 cases, males were 114 and females 86, age ranging from 17 years to 76 years.84 patients were of less than 40 years.Histologically 96% were adencarcinoma.According to TNM staging, 2% of the patients was with stage I, 24% stage II, 60% stage III and 14% stage IV.Types of Surgery were: 106 cases underwent APR, 40 cases LAR, 44 cases colostomy, 8 cases laparotomy and two patients underwent local excision only.Conclusions: The patients were young (42% within 40 years), about 86% presented at respectable stage (stage III or less) and majority (74%) were surgically respectable, with anal sphincter preservation in 27 %( 42/148).
