Cervical cancer is the second most common female cancer in Myanmar, next to breast cancer. In Myanmar, age standardized incidence rate per 100,000 women is 24.6 and mortality rate is 13.1 (WHO, 2009). Myanmar has high prevalence rate for cervical cancer in South East Asia followed by Cambodia. Cervical cancer mortality is higher than the maternal mortality and mortality from breast cancer. According to the National Statistics (2008 -2012), the incidence varied from 43.8 % and 48.58 % during these years showing a rising trend. Peak age group for cervical cancer is 45- 50 years. Majority were squamous cell carcinoma although the incidence of adenocarcinoma is rising. The commonest stages were between IIB and III. The commonest HPV genotype associated with cervical cancer is HPV 16 followed by HPV 31, 18 and 58 respectively. In Myanmar, there is no national screening program and opportunistic screening is practiced in urban areas only. Pilot studies for early detection with VIA were conducted in Yangon. HPV vaccination is introduced in 2008.It is not nationally available and self funded. Health education activities regarding risk factors, early warning signs, preventive measures such as screening and vaccination programs still need to be promoted.
