Recently, the number of patients with gastric cancer in upper third of the stomach has been increasing. Proximal gastrectomy (PG) and total gastrectomy (TG) are used to treat proximal gastric cancer. There is no consensus regaeding which procedure shold be selected. The aim of this study was
to cpmpare clinical outcomes between PG and TG for proximal gastric caner.
Patients and Methods
Seventy eight patients with gastric cancer underwent PG and forty one underwent TG. We analyzed the short term outcome of surgery and the nutrirional parameters in two groups.
Males were eighty two and females were thirty seven. The mean age was 68.4 years old in PG group and 61.9 in TG group. The mean operation time was significantly shorter for TG group than PG (329 vs. 371 min, P0.02). Blood loss was significantly lower in PG group (278 vs. 439g, P=0.04 ). Most nutritional parameters (WBC, Hb, Lymphocyte, TP, alb, CRP, PNI) and the rate of weight loss after surgery were similar in two groups.
Clinical outcomes between PG and TG ware similar. PG has potential to be one of the surgical procedure for proximal gastric cancer.
