日本人メルケル細胞癌における腫瘍微小環境と臨床病理組織学的特徴の相関に関する研究

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous neuroendocrine cancer that occurs in elderly people with generally aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. MCC has a high mortality rate that exceeds that of melanoma. The overall 5-year survival rate with Merkel cell carcinoma ranges from 30-64%. However, a part of MCC cases show good clinical course, for example, complete spontaneous regression or high effectiveness from radiotherapy. The predictive factors for prognosis are poorly understood, although several mechanisms have been suggested in the last decade.
Eleven cases with sufficient available paraffin-embedded tissue samples of MCC were enrolled in this study. These cases were treated between 2007 and 2018 in the Saitama Medical University International Medical Center and have various unique clinicopathologic characteristics. To investigate the correlation between clinicopathologic characteristics and the tumor microenvironment, they were assessed with immunohistochemistry for MCC PD-L1 expression, tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte and the presence of Merkel cell polyomavirus.
