Objective: To summarize the attendance rate of breast cancer screening and overview related socioeconomic factors in population-level and individual level.
Methods: We used online source PubMed, Wiley, Google scholar, Science Direct and Springer Link to search the related papers and articles. We searched the literature using the keyword 'breast cancer screening', combined with the keywords: "compliance rate, participation rate, attendance rate, uptake of breast cancer screening, mammography, breast clinical examination, non-attenders". Our search took place in December 2014, and was limited to publications in English.
Results: There were 111 compliance rates and most of them found in population based studies (n=97). The median compliance rate was 67%. The median attendance rate of breast cancer by country was 59%. European region had the highest attendance rate. High-income countries, covered by national breast cancer screening program, high incidence rate were associated with higher attendance rate.
A meta-analysis of 17 studies involving individual factors related to attendance of breast cancer screening showed women with higher income level were more likely to attend breast cancer screening (OR= 1.52, 95%CI: 1.03 - 2.00). We did not find any statistical relation between women's age (OR=0.99, 95%CI: 0.75 - 1.24), education (OR=0.77, 95%CI: 0.50 - 1.05), marital status (OR= 1.38, 95%CI: 1.13 - 1.63), employment status (OR= 1.39, 95%CI: 0.62-2.16) and health insurance (OR= 1.76, 95%CI: 0.27 - 3.25).
Conclusion: To conclude, developed countries that have population based screening program have the highest attendance rate of breast cancer screening. Women with higher income level are more likely to attend breast cancer screening even developed countries.
Key words: Breast cancer screening, mammography, compliance rate, attendance rate
